Cupcake Season Begins!

As Summer moves to Fall it is time to take a step outside and take a deep breath. Do you smell it??? Isn’t it great! While you may think I am writing about Football, I am not. It’s cupcakes you smell, not football!
Last night marked the opening of Cupcake Season in America. It doesn’t last long but you may want to tune in. During this 3-4 week season you can see universities all over America collect gate revenues, and players at these same Universities collect statistics. Why is this acceptable? In the NFL we have pre-season games, which admittedly are painful to watch, but when the games count on your record….they actually are enjoyable to watch. While the NCAA is showing us Ohio State and Miami destroying teams that have no right to be on the same field, The NFL gives us a rematch between New Orleans and Minnesota on week one. Not to mention rival games such as Cowboys and Redskins.
So what is wrong with college football? I guess it comes down to two things. One, due to the lack of a playoff system, a loss early will kill a team. Therefore, they refuse to schedule non-conference games that matter. Two, universities are willing to get crushed by a superior opponent to collect a huge check. I know people will email me and say what about Appalachain State beating Michigan…..To that I say, the blind squirrel finds a nut! This is the exception, not the rule.
In defense of College Football I guess I have…College Basketball. This is the only other major American sport that starts out with Cupcake season. And of course in defense of College Basketball there are great tournaments early in the season that have some interesting games and oh yeah they settle it all out in a little tournament at the end called “March Madness.” NASCAR has the Daytona 500 to kick off their season. Major League Baseball throws us right into rivalry games. The NBA has matchup and storylines that have us waiting as well.
I urge you to enjoy watching your alma mater in cupcake season, but if you need a break I have an answer for you. Believe it or not there are some programs in the NCAA that have decided to take a chance and actually avoid the early tempting tasty treat. Number 24 Oregon opens with number 6 TCU. Number 21 LSU opens with number 18 UNC and of course Monday night number 3 Boise State travels to the Nations Capital to take on number 10 Virginia Tech on a “neutral site.” If that doesn’t work…Enjoy number 1 Alabama hosting San Jose State.

Nicely said.
I like “cupcake season”, it let’s you watch teams you rarely get to meet. I always find myself wonder about who Michigan will schedule next for cupcake season. I like it when it’s a team I’ve never seen them play, it makes things more interesting and not too much routine.
Go cupcake season, GO BLUE!!! :-)
